Exu's Musical Career Highlights By Band Junk Sculpture HIGHS Playing a guerilla gig in a playground at Departure Bay. There was a wedding going on in the park and of course hundreds of headbangers drinking and listening to metal, just over the fence along the water's edge a few hundred feet away. The band set up with a Honda generator and within the first 8 bars of music, the band was surrounded by drunken rockers wanting to fight. The wedding party dissapeared indoors, the band held their ground and made the crowd face the music. The cops were called and everyone disappeared before they showed up. Man tough crowd for a first gig. Competing in Shindig, CITR's battle of the bands under a last minute name change to 'Jesus Rape Trials', and coming in second place, beating the band who laughed at our equipment during soundcheck, and their singer who cried when they came in third place. Li'l Ratskulls, the punk band who won that night, rocked! LOWS Almost getting beat up by hundreds of drunken yahoos in Nanaimo at the infamous Departure Bay Show. Getting booted out of our rehearsal space in Chemainus. Silent Gathering HIGHS Opening for Stickdog and Tragic Mulatto at Club Soda. Rehearsing in The Planet nightclub. Playing crazy gigs in redneck bars. Getting told we were too 70's by Jello Biafra. LOWS Playing the 8 band blowout or any show at The Waterfront nightclub. Getting told we were too 70's by Jello Biafra. Breaking up. Windwalker HIGHS Hacking a pig's head with a machete on stage at The Railway Club while competing in round one of Shindig, CITR's Battle Of the Bands. Having to get my band to help me move right before a show, 2 years in row on the same date exactly. Watching El Topo in the theatre right before a gig, 2 years in a row on the same date exactly. Everyone's reaction to El Topo when the band and friends accompanied me the 2nd time. Opening for Buffalo Tom at The Town Pump, and getting an excellent review in The Georgia Strait. Going on Tour with Tad and Spoonbender from Seattle. Getting lost one night in Edmonton while on tour and spending all night in Humpty's Restaurant with our drummer Brendan and a passle o' wild people, only to end up there again hours later hung over because the rest of the band wanted breakfast there. Little fluffy clouds and lightning while crossing the prairies. Doing a session for Brave New Waves. Finally doing a multi-tracked album where I was happy 'Sandglass' recorded at first music (though it never got released). LOWS Crossing the prairies. Breaking up. The Technicians (Of The Sacred) Buy The Technicians at the link above HIGHS Playing at 'Carlos and Bud's Tex Mex Restaurant', the manager was expecting a mariachi duo, instead he ended up with a heavy 5 piece that steamed up the garage doors and nearly rocked him into a nervous breakdown. We didn't get anything for playing, but the cooks were really enjoying it despite (or because of) the manager's stress. Playing at the Kootenay Music Festival, outside of Nelson. Although it was hot, with no real food in sight, it was an awesome 3 days of great bands and workshops. Other bands included Kinnie Star, Third Eye Tribe, The Rootabeggas. There were thousands of people. Playing at The Niagara, always had a great show, always got treated right. LOWS Playing to 20 people at the infamous 'Forbidden Plateau Festival', other acts included Rusty, The Rascals, Bif Naked. The show was a 3 day camping extravaganza with a massive soundsystem and stage at the bottom of a ski hill. They were expecting thousands of people, and there would have been , if the police hadn't blocked the road in, seized alcohol that anyone brought, and sent them home. It was quite surreal considering the few that did get in were on crack and shooting pellet guns in the campsite next to ours. Breaking up Thee High Prophets HIGHS LOWS |
